How Do I?

How do I…?

Get A Library Card?

Membership and library cards are free to residents of the towns of Waterbury and Duxbury. Registration forms are available at the checkout desk.  Adults must show ID and proof of address when registering.  Residents of other towns may obtain library cards by registering and paying a $10 annual nonresident fee.  Membership and cards are free to children under age 18 and to students with a current school ID, regardless of age or town of residence.  Parents or guardians must sign for children under age 16.

With your Waterbury Public Library card, you can borrow books, movies, CD’s, and magazines from our library.
You can also

  • download e-Books and audio books
  • use Mango online language instruction
  • sign up for online continuing education courses
  • download articles from magazines, newspapers, and reference books via the Vermont Online Library
  • request interlibrary loans.

Find My PIN?

On the back of your library card is a barcode and a number.  Your PIN is the last 5 digits of the barcode number.

Renew My Books (And Other Items)?

You will need to log in to your library account to renew materials online.  Use the Login to My Account link on the right side of this page.  Then type the barcode number from the back of your library card in the box.  Do not put in any spaces.  Your PIN is the last 5 barcode digits, again typed with no spaces.  If you are not able to log in, you may need to have your card renewed or your PIN reset.  Call the library for assistance if you are not able to log in.

After logging in, you will be able to see the items you have checked out or overdue, any items you may have on hold, and any fees you may have for lost or long overdue items. If an item is able to be renewed, a check-box will appear with that item. If you are unable to renew, call the library for assistance.

Place A Hold?

If you find an item you want to put on hold, look for “Place hold” and click on it.

Log into your library account, if prompted.  Your Login is your barcode number from the back of your card.  Type the number without any spaces.  Your Password or PIN is the last 5 digits of the barcode number, typed without the space.

Click “Place hold” button to finish placing your hold.

Get An Interlibrary Loan?

Interlibrary loans are available free to library members in good standing.

Interlibrary loan requests can be made in person at the circulation desk, over the phone (244-7036), or by email via the Contact Us tab above.  If you make your request by email, please give as much information as possible about the item – author, title, format (book, CD, DVD), and edition (if that’s important to you).  Include your current contact information and a “need by” date if you are working on a deadline.  The more notice the library has, the more likely it is that you will receive the materials you need on time.

When your items arrive at the library, someone will contact you as soon as they are ready to pick up.  Please pick them up promptly, since interlibrary loans will only be available for a few weeks.

Please note:  Interlibrary loan borrowers are responsible for observing the rules of the lending library and for paying any charges for lost or damaged materials.

Join The Book Group?

The library’s Food for Thought book group has been reading and talking about books since the fall of 2001.  Fiction and nonfiction titles alternate on the reading list.

Food for Thought welcomes new members and drop-in visitors.  Discussions are scheduled for 7:00 PM on the third Wednesday of the month from September through May at the library.  Once a year, usually in August, the group meets outside the library to choose its annual reading list.

The library purchases 10 – 15 paperback copies of the books on the Food for Thought reading list.  After the group has discussed each title, book sets are made available for other book groups to borrow.

To see the current reading schedule, click here.  [This will go to a Book Group page under Events]

Join The Friends?

The Friends of the Waterbury Public Library is a 501(c) (3) tax exempt organization.

The Friends (usually) meet on the first Monday of the month at 5:30 PM at the library, and new members are always welcome.

The Friends’ most ambitious project to date has been the capital campaign for a new library for Waterbury, but the Friends help the library in many ways.  To learn more about the Friends’ activities, or to make a donation, please visit their website.

Adopt An Author?

Do you have a favorite author whose latest books you just can’t wait to read?   Do you rush right out and buy their newest releases? The library’s Adopt-an-Author program is perfect for you!

Here’s how it works. You agree to adopt a particular author, and the library promises to order each new book that author publishes.  When a new book by your author arrives, you pay the library’s cost (which is often discounted as much as 43% discount).  The library adds the book to its collection, puts an “Adopt-an-Author” bookplate in the front of the book, and checks it out to you as the first reader.  After you return the book, it goes on the “New” book shelf for other readers to enjoy.  Everybody wins!  You get to read your favorite author’s newest books without delay, your bookshelves stay uncluttered, and the library’s book budget stretches a little bit further.
